Robert J Azevedo is a maritime artist whose work thrives in salt air. Although Moncton is home and he strives for opportunities to show his work East of Quebec, he has been working on building his roots in Vancouver for the past nine years. His performances depend on a childlike mix of exploration, education, discovery and play – not to mention a sense of becoming.
He is a graduate of Simon Fraser University’s School for the Contemporary Arts where he majored in Contemporary Dance and English Literature. While maintaining these interests, he is currently studying to become a sign language interpreter at Douglas College.
His practice is currently centered around creation-based collaboration. It is driven by a desire to disrupt the mundane through explorations of how space is occupied both physically and energetically. Besides dance, he is particularly interested in devised theatre.
